Description
A vintage Swedish movie poster reproduction of ''Thunder Below'', a 1932 American pre-Code drama film directed by Richard Wallace. The film stars Tallulah Bankhead, Charles Bickford, and Paul Lukas and is known for its exploration of the struggles faced by a submarine crew during World War I.
The film's plot centers on Commander Tiger Shark (played by Charles Bickford), the captain of a U.S. Navy submarine, and his wife, Edwina (played by Tallulah Bankhead). As Tiger Shark and his crew undertake dangerous missions to protect Allied ships from German U-boats during World War I, Edwina grapples with her husband's long absences and the uncertainty of his safety.
"Thunder Below" offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by submarine crews during wartime, including the physical and emotional toll of living and working in confined spaces beneath the sea. The film explores themes of sacrifice, love, and the strains of separation experienced by military families.
Tallulah Bankhead delivers a strong performance as Edwina, conveying the character's emotions and inner turmoil as she anxiously awaits her husband's return from each mission. Charles Bickford brings depth to the role of Commander Tiger Shark, portraying a dedicated and brave submarine captain.
"Thunder Below" is notable for its portrayal of life on a submarine and its depiction of naval combat during World War I. The film includes sequences of underwater action that were well-executed for the time.
While "Thunder Below" may not be as widely remembered as some other classic films of its era, it remains an interesting historical piece that sheds light on the challenges and sacrifices of submariners and their loved ones during wartime. It is a reminder of the emotional toll of military service and the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
About the artist:
Gösta Åberg (Sept. 6, 1905, Stockholm - April 9, 1981) was a Swedish painter, cartoonist, sculptor, and advertising artist. Between 1935 and 1965, Åberg designed posters for thousands of films, which are now part of the Film History collections at the Technical Museum in Stockholm.
Aberg creates incredibly modern conceptual graphic artworks. The faces of the movie stars are no longer the main protagonists of the composition, but often objects or distinctive scenes. The style is linear, geometric, essential.
Aberg creates extremely symbolic compositions, consisting of evocative elements but delineated in a precise manner. His works are characterized by simplicity and stylization. The objects are made uniform and simplified, giving the viewer a feeling of order and comprehensibility. Aberg is a refined interpreter of the world of cinema, which tends to make complex worlds immediate and clear.
